About pocket diapers

Pocket diapers are exactly what they sound like. They are cloth diapers that have a pocket. Most generally they have two layers, an outer layer and an inner layer, with a hole or pocket that separate the two at one point, forming an opening for the absorbent material to be inserted. The absorbent material that is inserted into the pocket is what absorbs the moisture when baby relieves himself. It can be removed later for more effective cleaning. Many moms believe that pocket diapers are the most innovative invention in diapering ever.

Pocket diapers can be two piece diapering systems with a waterproof outer layer that requires only a stuffer. They can also be a three piece diapering system with a non-waterproof outer layer that will require the use of a diaper cover.

    Advantages of Pocket Diapers:
  • You decide what to "stuff" the pocket with...so you can find the right absorbency level
  • Easy to clean because they "come apart"
  • Can be very trim if absorbent stuffing is not bulky
  • Available in lots of cute colors and prints
    • Disadvantages of Pocket Diapers
    • A separate stuffer is required to make the diaper function
    • Can be bulky if to much stuffin' in inserted
    • for onesize pocket diapers maybe bulkier to fit on smaller and younger baby as it has many button to snap and must be fold over.

More about pocket diapers:

What is a pocket diaper? A pocket diaper is a diaper sewn on 3 sides with an opening on one of the edges. You insert a soaker layer into the opening. The pocket diaper is well liked because you get to decide how much stuffing you need in the diaper and what you want to stuff it with. The pocket diaper tends to be a trim diaper option for daytime use and has the ability to be as thick as you need for overnight.

What is a stay dry pocket diaper? A "stay dry" pocket diaper is a diaper that uses an inside layer that has properties in it that "wick" urine away from the baby. This leaves the baby with a dry feeling even though the diaper may be very wet.

Why use a pocket diaper? Pocket diapers are well known for being very easy to use. They typically go on as easy as a disposable diaper. Because the insert is removed, the inserts and diaper get very clean in the wash. They can be super trim during the day, allowing you to put that cute pair of jeans on your baby. They can also be super thick at night when you need the extra protection.

How absorbent are pocket diapers? They are as absorbent as you want them to be. You can add a single stuffer to the diaper and have a nice trim daytime diaper or you can add 10 layers of thick hemp and have a super absorbent nighttime diaper. Always remember that all pocket diapers are only as good as what they are stuffed with. This means if you have a 2 layer micro-fiber insert in the diaper it will not last all night and will need to be changed often.

Speaking of changing how often do I need to change my baby? You should change your baby every time poop. For a newborn this is quite frequent but as your baby gets older you will be changing their diaper every 1 1/2 - 3 hours during the day.

Can I re-use the pocket diaper? Yes and no. If you are using the diaper as a true pocket by placing an insert into the pocket, then you must change the entire diaper and insert every time. The pocket will need to be washed between uses. Alternatively, you may also use the pocket diaper as a diaper cover. If using it this way, you may re-use the pocket diaper unless it becomes wet.

What do I do with the diapers when my baby outgrows them? This is one of the big benefits of pocket diapers. The resell value. You can resell your used pocket diaper that is in good condition for about 1/2-3/4 of the cost you paid for the diaper new. Or if you are planning on having more children you may pack the diapers away until the next baby arrives. Either way you will be saving even more money then if you were using disposables.

How do I wash a pocket diaper? Washing a pocket diaper is as simple as washing anything else. Simply put it in the washer, do a pre-wash, add your detergent, and come back when they are done. There are a few specifics regarding washing pocket diapers, please visit our washing do's and don't here.

Can I put my pocket diaper in the dryer? Because every pocket maker will have different directions, always check with them first. With that being said, any pocket diaper that is made with products obtained in the USA may be washed and dried on high. The high heat is actually beneficial for the outer PUL layer. You may also hang your pocket diaper to dry but we do recommend drying it in the dryer every now and then. As manufacturers of pocket diapers, we dry our diapers on high after each wash and they work just as beautifully as they did on day one.
